Young and Traditional

In the attic of an old building in the center of Madrid, my client, a young professional with a love for rustic things, found this 21-square-meter apartment. He asked us for a comfortable kitchen to cook every day and invite friends. He also wanted a large walkin closet and a convenient laundry area since he was passionate about fashion and enjoyed taking care of his clothes. The apartment had no terrace or views and was quite dark despite being on the top floor. A load-bearing wall divided the space into two rooms, leaving one slightly smaller than the other, making it challenging to distribute the rooms freely. We quickly realised that fitting all the desired functions in such a small space was a significant challenge. It was indeed a complicated space to work with.

However, we didn't give up on our mission to please this charming client. We solved it with a mix of our special ability to work with small spaces and a stroke of luck. During the demolition, we discovered an extra 1.5m of height above the ceiling beams, allowing us to position the bedroom above in a loft-style, accessible by a staircase built by our carpenter. This maneuver freed up space for a comfortable kitchen with a bar counter and a cozy living room. The smaller of the two rooms was used to accommodate the entire "service" area with a walk-in closet and a laundry room. The extra height also gave the small apartment a sense of airiness and space. To bring in light, we created a skylight that flooded the apartment with natural light.

Our young client asked us to decorate with a traditional look but all in white, with all the beams exposed. "I am young and traditional," he said.
